Almost as soon as registration opened for the Surfrider Foundation’s 9th Annual International Surfing Day kids’ clinic, it closed again. Just two hours after opening, all 120 slots were full.
Rob Nixon, chairman of the Surfrider Foundation South Texas Chapter said he wished more slots were available. “Registration opens every year June 1st,” he said, explaining that interest is always high for the free event.
This year’s event will occur on Saturday, June 20 at Isla Blanca Park and will feature two surfing clinics, a beach cleanup, and educational time focused on teaching kids about the ecology of the beach, Nixon said. Similar events will take place across the country, he said. “Ours — we’ve been doing for nine years — is a free children’s surf clinic to get kids involved in surfing and show them the joy of the beach,” he said.
That joy is infectious, and keeps both kids and volunteers coming back year after year. “We have kids that started out in clinics … that are now instructors,” Nixon said.
Though all the slots are full, Nixon said a few might open up on Saturday due to last minute cancellations, but added that event sponsors On The Beach and Island Native offer surfing lessons year round.
