The threat of severe rain kept the Rotary Club of Port Isabel from setting over 300 American flags out for display in honor of Patriot’s Day Friday.

“It’s just bad flag etiquette, if there’s not a light on the flag, to just leave it in the rain,” said President DeeOnda Ahadi Friday. The club regularly places American flags on display in front of businesses and homes during patriotic holidays.

The displays are one of several fundraising efforts undertaken by the club throughout the year. “It’s one of our biggest fundraisers,” Ahadi said. “We thought it was a really great idea because it is a way of honoring our country, our freedom and the people who sacrifice their lives for our freedom,” she said. Business and homeowners pay to have one or more flags displayed in front of their property.

“We missed this holiday, this particular holiday,” Ahadi said, adding that the next display would take place in November on Veterans Day.

Monies raised through the club’s various fundraising efforts go back into the Laguna Madre community, such as supplying dictionaries to Point Isabel ISD elementary school children and funding scholarships for college-bound Port Isabel High School students. The club also uses funds for humanitarian projects in Honduras.

“We appreciate all of our customers, as well as the community support that we get, and really enjoy being a part of this community,” Ahadi said.

  1. Such a waste, it would’ve been an awesome and memorable display to remember those we lost in 9/11.
