Despite it being the coolest night of the fallseason so far, the 5th annual Ay! Chihuahua fundraiser had a small but enthusiastic crowd in attendance at the Port Isabel Event and Cultural Center Saturday evening. While some were there strictly to play Loteria, and others just to socialize and enjoy the music and delicious Mexican buffet, all the proceeds from the event benefited the Isabel Y. Garcia Animal Shelter of Port Isabel.

Gary Wilgocki, a self-described quasi-Winter Texan living in Laguna Vista by way of Sequim, Washington, attended with his wife Mary and daughter Caitlin. “We like to support local charities and non-profits and we like to donate,” he commented. Sharing their table was fellow Winter Texan Paula Wolff of Oklahoma City, who expressed, “It’s just an opportunity to come and meet people and get out in the community. It’s a no-kill shelter, too, and I support that.” Melin Martinez, born and raised in Port Isabel, attended the event bedecked in a head-to-toe red Christmas-themed outfit, exclaimed, “I came because I want to play Loteria and enjoy the music!”
