SPI: Update of current improvement projects

At their regular meeting Wednesday evening, the South Padre Island City Staff gave the City Council an update on current projects going on throughout the Island. Many of the projects are on or even ahead of schedule, although Sunset Drive and Gulf Boulevard repairs have been a recent headache for the City.

Up for discussion near the end of the update session, after being long overdue, was work on Sunset Street and Gulf Boulevard. Public Works Director Gutierrez has been unhappy with timing and quality of work by Zimmerman Construction, who is based out of Burnette, Texas. After recent damages to the water line on top of concerns about the current condition of the repairs, Gutierrez recommended putting a stop order on the project so as to consider further action.

The city staff began their report by giving the council an update on the status of the John L. Tompkins park that is currently under construction. Phase one of the project is just getting started and will consist of foundational infrastructure including a pump house, parking, a basketball court and two playgrounds.
