The Port Isabel Police Department toy drive was a great success, said Chief of Police Gualberto “Wally” Gonzalez.

“The toy drive was as successful as it has been for the last 20 years,” Gonzalez said Monday. “We gave out close to 400 (toys),” he said.

The police department collected toys and monetary donations for several weeks before handing out the gifts at the Port Isabel Event and Cultural Center last Friday. “We did it at the Event Center for the first time. It was very roomy, very nice,” Gonzalez said.

“The public responded very good,” he said, describing how people from all over the Laguna Madre region donated toys and money.
