The Port Isabel City Commission will hold a workshop to discuss the possibility of regulating smoking.

The idea was put forth by Commissioner Juan Jose “J.J.” Zamora at the commission’s last meeting just days before Christmas. “I think it’s just something that we’ve got to do,” Zamora said during discussion of the agenda item.

It’s not an idea he took lightly, though, recognizing that local businesses may cater to clientele who may smoke. “I know that there’s a lot of business owners that don’t like too much to have it (regulated). … I’d like to see if we can have a workshop, and see if we can get the community involved and see how it feels,” he said.

For Zamora, however, the issue is a matter of public health. “I think this is more of a health issue that needs to be looked at more than anything else,” he continued.
