In the past few weeks, there has been much discussion regarding the addition of a skate park at the new John L. Tompkins Park on South Padre Island. Consideration began with the Parks, Recreation and Beautification Committee and has been addressed across City boards as plans have progressed. On Tuesday, the SPI Economic Development Corporation (EDC) considered helping to fund the project in the amount $100,000.

The request was brought to the EDC in November, however, after hearing comments from residents in opposition to the skate park, EDC members tabled the item until opposing opinions were properly vetted.

Parks committee members have claimed widespread community support and committee member Kerry Schwartz, along with his daughter, have begun fundraising, already raising almost $10,000 with another $10,000 committed in matching funds.
