The clear blue skies of South Padre Island were the perfect backdrop for an amazing array of swooping, diving, fluttering kites this past weekend, as Kite Fest 2016 took place on the bayside flats just north of the Convention Centre. The two day event, organized by B & S Kites, drew spectators of all ages, including scores of Winter Texans and locals from all over the Rio Grande Valley with their families, kids and pets in tow.

This was the first fest after a two year hiatus, and record crowds turned out for both days of the event to see a variety of skilled flyers compete. Teams of stunt kite fliers, sporting clever monikers such as Team Rev Riders and the Flying Willoughbys, came from all over the U.S. to showcase their talents — some from as far away as Oregon, Florida, Maryland, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Washington and North Carolina. This year, there was also an indoor kite exhibition on Friday evening at the Convention Centre, as well as a silent auction and Mexican buffet Saturday night at the Isla Grand Beach Resort.
