P.I. Lifters Strike Gold at Pace Meet

The Port Isabel High Tarpon and Lady Tarpon powerlifters were at it again in Brownsville last week.  They were back at Pace High School on Thursday (Feb. 4) for a tri-meet at which teams representing Pace and Rio Hondo high schools were also on hand.

They did pretty well, too, as four lifters – two girls and two guys – all won gold medals for having the highest total lift in their weight classes.

For the Lady Tarpons it was Vanessa Ybarra and Jocelyn Padilla who came out on top in their divisions.  Jose Cayetano and Juan Mireles struck gold for the Tarpons.

“Everybody improved on their total lifts,” powerlifting head coach Victor Rubalcaba told the Press this week.  “We had a couple kids who were almost at the 500-pound mark in the squat and dead lift.”
