Hordes of hungry chili enthusiasts lined up with spoons and napkins in hand, waiting for the noon starting time of this year’s South Padre Island Chili Expo, (S.P.I.C.E) the annual chili cook-off held at Louie’s Back Yard. A wide variety of entries were served up, with their unique concoctions divided into five categories: traditional red chili, white/green chili, freestyle “anything goes” chili, vegetarian, and just beans. The yearly event is sponsored by Walk for Women, a local non-profit organization that offers financial and emotional assistance for those afflicted with cancer. All the proceeds from the event benefit Walk for Women.
