In this day and age, it is a rare occurrence to enjoy a career in a single profession that spans three decades, but that’s exactly what South Padre Island Assistant Chief of Police Javier Garza accomplished.  Garza recently retired from the Island’s police force after 30 years of service. On Tuesday evening, Garza’s public service was celebrated by family, friends and colleagues at the Isla Grand Resort.

When asked what he was looking forward to the most in retirement, Garza replied, “Rest! This is my 30th year – I started as a police dispatcher in 1985.” He smiled and shook his head when asked if he had any vacation or travel plans, or desires for developing any new hobbies,  saying, “No, no new hobbies, just some fishing, a little golfing, and start looking for the next adventure.”

Garza reminisced about one of his early successes when he was just beginning his career. “I remember I was just starting out, I’d only been with the department a couple of months. I took a report over the phone for a stolen vehicle. On my way home, I saw the truck! I called Los Fresnos PD and we made a felony stop,” he recalled. Not bad for a rookie dispatcher.
