The Texas Gulf Surfing Association’s (TGSA) surf competition, set to occur at Isla Blanca Park this weekend, may be postponed due to an incoming cold front, said TGSA president John Blaha Wednesday.
“We’re kind of up in the air … due to conditions,” Blaha said. “We’ve got very strong northerly winds coming in.”
The association will make the final call by Friday morning, Blaha said.
If it’s not a go this weekend, it will likely be postponed until the next, he said, and should draw a good crowd.
“Typically, we’ve been running roughly 80-90 competitors,” Blaha said of the TGSA’s previous four competitions held all along the Texas Gulf coast, from Corpus Christi to Matagorda Bay.
One such competitor is South Padre Island native Shawn Cooksey, who currently sits atop the leader boards in team competition. “It’s fun. I hadn’t done a contest in like four years,” Cooksey said Tuesday. “It’s been a pretty good year for me.”
