Residents of Rio Hondo, and anybody else who might be looking for a back way to South Padre Island or Laguna Atascosa, will find themselves having to make a detour if they attempt to use General Brant Road.
The 11.4 mile stretch of road between FM 1847 and the Port Isabel Detention Center/Laguna Atascosa Refuge will be undergoing major construction for the next two years. The road, which was recently acquired by the State of Texas from Cameron County, will be closed to all traffic at the “hard closure” location mentioned above.
