Mock, Silva Qualify for Regionals

Omar Silva and Trey Mock have both qualified for this week’s UIL Region IV Track and Field Meet in Kingsville.  Silva made it in the 110-meter hurdles event, and Mock qualified in the discus.

Both athletes qualified for regional competition by placing in the top four in their respective events at last week’s area meet, which was also held in Kingsville.  Silva placed a close second in the 110-meter hurdles race, and Mock was third in the discus competition.

It was almost a photo finish in the 110 hurdles as Silva was practically right beside  Beeville’s Matthew Guerra as they hit the finish line.  The automatic timing system showed Guerra in first with a time of 15.53 seconds, and Silva was less than a tenth of a second slower at 15.61.  It was even closer between Silva and Ethan Owens of Sinton, who was only 0.05 seconds behind in third place.

“He clipped the second hurdle…slowed him down a little bit,” head Tarpon track coach Joe Gonzales said this week.  “Then he cleared the third hurdle and he was in the lead at that time.  And I feel that if he doesn’t clip the second hurdle…and he runs clear, then he probably wins the race.”
