Port Isabel High sophomore Natalie Garza is in Austin today (Friday, May 13) to compete in this weekend’s UIL State Track and Field meet. Garza qualified for state competition in the 400-meter dash by placing third in that event in the Region IV meet at Kingsville two weeks ago.
The Press sought out Garza and Lady Tarpons track coach Julie Breedlove at the high school athletic offices this week to get their thoughts on this culminating event of the 2016 track and field season. “Natalie’s worked really hard and has really pushed herself,” Coach Breedlove said Monday. The top two finishers in each event in each of four regions automatically qualify for the state meet. Garza made it as a wild card entry by posting a time that was the fastest of the four third-place regional finishers in the 400 meters.
