Several events throughout the region will be held to mark Memorial Day this year.

Local Boy Scouts will assist members of Port Isabel VFW Post No. 8791 in placing American flags at the gravesites of veterans at the Port Isabel City Cemetery, said VFW member Robert Vela earlier this week. The flags will be placed, beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 28 in advance of a ceremony to be held on Memorial Day itself.

The public is invited to join VFW Post No. 8791 at the cemetery to honor fallen soldiers and other veterans starting at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 30 Vela said. During the ceremony, the names of service members from the Laguna Madre area who were reported killed or missing in action will be read aloud, accompanied by the tolling of a bell, Vela said. The names of deceased veterans will also be read, he said.

Port Isabel Mayor Juan Jose “J.J.” Zamora, a Vietnam War veteran, will be the guest of honor and will address those in attendance before Port Isabel Police Department officers conduct a 21-gun salute and TAPS are played.
