The sweltering heat of summer couldn’t dissuade Laguna Madre residents from honoring the men and women who lost their lives while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. Ceremonies were held in Port Isabel and Laguna Vista Monday to mark the somber day.

In Port Isabel, members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post No. 8791, the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary Post 498, and other locals gathered in front of the entrance to the Port Isabel City Cemetery for a ceremony featuring an address by Vietnam veteran and Port Isabel Mayor Juan Jose “J.J.” Zamora, a reading of the names of deceased veterans, and a 21 gun salute courtesy the Port Isabel Police Department.

But locals weren’t the only ones in attendance. Paul Cox, of Houston, brought his young daughter and her best friend to the ceremony, too.
