Reiterating calls for increased transparency, Port Isabel Mayor Juan Jose “J.J.” Zamora asked the City Commission to consider setting the scope of a previously discussed forensic audit to focus on the Economic Development Corporation’s (EDC) revolving loan program, the Yacht Club and the Port Isabel Event and Cultural Center.

The Commission voted unanimously to so set the scope of the forensic audit, which City attorney Gilberto Hinojosa explained, “will tell you whether you got what you paid for.”

Amid questions from residents as to whether or not the City had operated under the guidance of annual budgets in the past, Hinojosa further explained the forensic audit is not an examination of the entirety of the City’s finances, but rather of projects specified for review by the Commission. “This helps us identify where we had some immediate problems,” Hinojosa said, saying the City may consider litigation on projects found to have problems.

In particular, the Yacht Club was a topic of discussion not only during the talks of the forensic audit but also during discussions about budget amendments.
