Council votes to intervene on LNG

The South Padre Island City Council had a busy start to the month, meeting for a budget review, strategic planning session, and their regularly scheduled meeting. One of the more popular items up for discussion during their meeting was the consideration to file a motion to intervene on the application filed by the LNG stakeholders who are working to bring LNG facilities to the Rio Grande Valley.

According to City Councilwoman Alita Bagley, filing the motion to intervene will preserve the City’s legal standing regarding future development of the proposed project and additionally, allows the City to receive all relevant information pertaining to the issue directly from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Mayor Barry Patel opened the floor for anyone to speak in opposition to the City’s filing, to which there were no takers, and after just a short discussion, the City Council’s approval to file the motion to intervene was met with applause from the crowd at the June 1st meeting.

This motion to intervene follows the City Council’s vote to oppose the development of the LNG facilities several months ago. Councilwoman Theresa Metty said, “I just see this as a continuation of a position that we took several months ago, and this is the next thing we should do.” The item received unanimous approval.
