The ominous rain clouds which glided above the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway couldn’t keep the throngs away for the Second Annual Summer Longest Causeway Run Saturday morning.

And indeed, even Mother Nature herself seemed interested in the race, as the rain drops remained at bay until all but a few walkers remained crossing the bridge’s 2.39 mile span.

“We monitored it the whole week,” said Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce Director Betty Wells of the weather forecast. Though the runners and many walkers made it to the finish line at the Port Isabel Event and Cultural Center ahead of the storm, several straggling participants were removed from the bridge for their own safety.

“The rain made it very difficult for our last group of walkers,” Wells said. “Our buses went back across the bridge and started picking people up.”
