Port Isabel city officials wanted answers after a man in police custody escaped from the Port Isabel City Jail, injuring three officers in the process before carjacking an elderly woman and leading state law enforcement officers on a pursuit that spanned several counties.
During a city commission meeting shortly after the incident, Commissioner Carmen Rios suggested holding a workshop to learn more about the jail facility and how a similar event could be prevented in the future. “My priority here was ‘what can we do to help officers?’” Rios said during the workshop, which was held last Thursday afternoon at City Hall.
The Commission was presented with a video tour of the inside of the jail, along with a view of the door the suspect used to escape. Sgt. Armando Mora, along with City Manager Jared Hockema, fielded questions from the three members of the Commission who were present, as well as from a handful of residents.
“It’s an embarrassment for the City of Port Isabel,” said one man.
