Woodwinds Vital to Marching Band Sound

Special to the PRESS

The three main sections of a marching band are the brass, the percussion and the woodwinds, and not necessarily in that order.

The woodwind section of the Port Isabel Silver Tarpon Marching Band is strong this year and has the full confidence of head band director Scott Hartsfield.

“The numbers are up for the woodwind section,” Hartsfield told the Press recently.  “There are a lot of returners who were All-Staters last year, so there are a lot of really outstanding players in that section this year.”

“Without us there wouldn’t be a band,” clarinet player and band vice-president, Edith Carreto said last week.  “We’re like the frosting on the cake.  It’s the biggest section we’ve had in a long time … 20 of us.  Our instructor, Mrs. Tackett, does a really good job maintaining us in order.”
