On Saturday, Nov.11 the cities of Port Isabel and South Padre Island each held ceremonies in observance of Veterans Day. City officials and guest speakers came together to educate local residents and reflect on their diverse experiences at war.

Veterans from around the Rio Grande Valley and surrounding areas gathered to celebrate and honor the lives of active soldiers, retired veterans and those who died in their service.

On South Padre Island, residents gathered at the Convention Centre for an afternoon of remembrance and reflection. Mayor Barry Patel spoke about his involvement with local active and retired military personnel.

“Over the past two years, I have had the opportunity to meet some of the incredible men and women who have served our country. They [the soldiers] make so many sacrifices and to them I say, ‘thank you,’” Patel said.

After the mayor’s remarks, former South Padre Island Mayor Robert “Bob” Pinkerton recognized veterans in the audience.
