Senior Port Isabel power lifter Julianna Barrera was almost perfect at the first power lifting meet of the season. She had successful lifts on all but one attempt and won the gold medal for first place at Brownsville Lopez High School last Friday.
Barrera lifted 350 pounds on her third attempt in the squat lift, got 170 pounds on the bench press and closed out with a 305-pound effort in the dead lift. It all added up to a total lift of 825 pounds.
With that total Barrera has assured herself a place in the regional meet later this season. Her personal best total lift is 960 pounds but the goal this early in the season is to make sure she’s eligible for the regional meet.
