Moments in Time

Editor’s Note: Moments in Time is a collection of recovered newspaper briefs and other publications that offer a look back at the history of the Rio Grande Valley and the rest of the world.
A NEW
ARMOR-PIERCING
BULLET

A new 30-caliber bullet, which will penetrate a sheet of steel over 3/4 of an inch thick at a distance of 50 yards, and is estimated to have a velocity sufficient to pass through a line of 20 men, has been tested by agents of the war department. In one of the tests made, projectiles were found to be in good condition after passing through a steel plate. (Editor’s Note: This was originally published in “The OKLASODAK” (San Benito TX.) on Nov. 1916.)

CHIVALROUS
COWBOYS

The simple act of reverence and courtesy displayed the other day. Court of funeral courtesy by Colonel Zach. Mulhouse Cowboy Band was one of the finest, most chivalrous things on record. They were burning up the atmosphere of Commerce St, playing a hot time when they suddenly came face to face with the procession of the Oblate Fathers of Saint Mary’s, burying the body of one of their priests to the cemetery. With uncovered heads, they immediately stood to one side and played nearer. My God to thee. An age of chivalry could not surpass, probably not equal, this simple act of reverence from these untamed horsemen of the plains. (Editor’s Note: This was originally published in “Laredo Times” on Nov. 4, 1902.)

UNLUCKY
Seeing a ladder leaning against the house he was passing, he went out of his way and walked under it, to show his contempt for an old superstition. In doing so, he brushed up against the ladder and that loosened the half gallon of black paint that was insecurely fastened to the top. That fell down. He never walks under ladders now. He thinks there is something in it. (Editor’s Note: This was originally published in “The Brownsville Daily Herald” on Nov. 4, 1902.)
