On November 16, the Veteran’s Administration Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System and City of Port Isabel held a ribbon cutting event for the Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) at the Port Isabel Event & Cultural Center. The mobile medical unit will be used to schedule veterans for health care check-ups and will be offering various services to veterans in the area.

“The Mayor and City of Port Isabel Commissioners are excited to partner with this program that will make healthcare more readily accessible for our Veterans,” said John Sandoval, Assistant to the Port Isabel City Manager.

The idea for the MMU started when the Health Care System received feedback that many veterans were having trouble with transportation in accessing their healthcare through the VA. The group looked at the age, health conditions and the location of their patients and identified Port Isabel as being a good location for this outreach program.

All the city had to provide was a location and electrical hook-up on the days needed. The unit will be stationed in the parking lot of the Port Isabel Event & Cultural Center located at 309 E. Railroad St.
