At the Port Isabel City Council meeting on November 21, City Inspector Joshua Garza proposed that two of the streets in the preliminary plat map of phase 2 of the new Bahia Point Subdivision be changed to local sports heroes. The City Council voted unanimously to rename one of the streets Juan Castillo Avenue and another Eliseo Villareal Avenue.
Juan Castillo was born and raised in Port Isabel, attending its schools. He is described as having been a devastating hitter in both the tight end and linebacker positions while attending Port Isabel High School. He has since risen to be one of the preeminent Hispanic coaches of the NFL.
In 1976, Castillo weighed a formidable 180 pounds. He tied a state record with five interceptions in one game that year for the Tarpons and made the All-State team. While attending and playing football at Monterey Institute of Technology and Higher Education, he earned a scholarship to be a Javelina at Texas A&M University-Kingsville where he was a star performer.
In the mid-80s, Castillo played for the San Antonio Gunslingers in the United States Football League under former Port Isabel coach Tommy Roberts, registering several crucial tackles and assists. He soon after became the linebacker coach for King High School in Kingsville, Texas.
