The saga of Dune Dog, Fisher Boy, Pt. 1.

The following is the first part of a two part story which will continue next week and was written by Larry Larson.

My wife Mary and I began visiting South Padre Island nearly 40 years ago, and fell in love with its nice weather, beautiful ocean views, proximity to Mexico, and the nearly 30 miles of remote beach.
We used to love going for rides down the public beach, stopping to pick shells, going for long walks in the dunes, and seeing the life that abounded on the long and narrow island.

For the last couple of decades, Mary and I have heard the story of a Black Lab dog, which roamed the sand dunes that lay between the open ocean and the Laguna Madre, or the bay between the Island and the mainland. This dog kind of became a legend to the locals. When they told the story to tourists at a local coffee shop, or pub, they would choke up with emotion, look out the windows as if they were looking for the

brave Black Lab, and say, “We all called him, ‘Dune Dog, Fisher Boy.’”
Today I’m going to tell you the real story about the dog, whose bravery touched so many lives on this Island which my wife and I came to love. At the same time, we hid the truth that the dog was really ours, at one time.
