Forty-two students from the Port Isabel HS Band “shined” bright this past Saturday, Dec. 3, at the ATSSB HS All-Region Band competition held at Rio Hondo High School. High school band students from Port Isabel to Rio Grande City participated in the ATSSB annual competition that leads to the Texas All-State Band. Each student performed two prepared pieces and an assortment of scales.
Port Isabel HS had 28 students earn a spot in the All-Region Band with one 1st alternate including four -1st chair winners. Fifteen of these students will advance to the next round of competition on Jan. 7 in Alice, TX for the ATSSB Area Round. These 15 students will have the opportunity to earn a position in the Texas All-State Band.
Last year, Port Isabel HS had 23 students compete at Rio Hondo, 16 students made All-Region Band and ten advanced to Area in Alice.
Winners include Mark Mejorado, 1st chair Flute, Ivonne Gonzalez, 5th chair Flute, & Lily Perez, 6th chair Flute-all advancing to Area. Other All-Region Flutes include Kylie Bush, 7th chair Flute, & Brigette Montes, 11th chair Flute. Grace Ortiz, 7th chair Bb Clarinet-advancing to Area, Zoey Baxter, 13th chair Bb Clarinet, Saturn Trejo, 14th chair Bb Clarinet, Osiris Espinoza, 16th chair Bb Clarinet, & Jubilee Montes, 19th chair Bb Clarinet.
