This past Thursday, Dec. 8, the Port Isabel Lady Tarpons participated in the 16-team Lyford Tournament. The tournament consisted of the following schools: Port Isabel, Harvest Christian, Rio Hondo, Edinburg North, Lyford, Santa Rosa, La Feria, Edinburg Economedes IDEA Riverview, La Villa, IDEA Frontier, Harlingen JV, Santa Maria, Brownsville Jubilee, Progreso and Weslaco Pike.
In game one, the Lady Tarpons picked up a nice win over Harlingen JV, 49-32. PI’s Duo of Layni Mata and Emily Burrage proved too much for the Lady Cardinals as they racked up 19 and 18 points respectfully.
The win put the Lady Tarpons in the championship bracket, matched up against the Edinburg North Cougars. It was a hard-fought game, but the Lady Cougars came out on top as they beat the Lady Tarpons 58-56. The Lady Tarpons made one final push in the fourth quarter outscoring EN 15-8, but the Lady Cougars survived the rally. PI’s Burrage led the team with 31 points, followed by Mata’s 21 points.
In the Fifth Place Bracket, the Lady Tarpons had a big setback against Rio Hondo as they fell to the Lady Bobcats, 90-46. The leading PI scorers in that game were Burrage with 22 points and freshman Nadia Flaig, chipping in with 12 points.
