Dec. 14 saw a special meeting of the South Padre Island City Council.
During public comments, the city’s Park and Recreation manager reported that she had applied for a grant for the Christmas parade and lighting. The grant was approved and the city received ten thousand dollars to help with the Christmas events.
Darla Lapeyre gave a demonstration informing the council of the 50th anniversary of the city’s incorporation. The event is being held April 12 at 11:30 a.m. at the Isla Grand. Tickets or tables for the event are being sold through Darla herself and 22 tables have already been sold. Any and all profits from the event will be going towards a Sand Dollar’s for Success Grant Round.
“The Sand Dollars for Success,” Darla explained, “in case you don’t know, is a program of the EDC. We’ve been doing that for about six or seven years now. It’s based on a business plan competition.” The last round of these grants were rewarded to Nautico and Quinn’s Gallery.
