The South Padre Island City Council held a special meeting on Monday, Feb. 7, 2023.
Starting with Public Comments, council member Eva Jean Dalton addressed social media posts regarding cross walks on the Island.
“Just a reminder, in the state of Texas…whether there are blinking lights or not, when someone is walking across the street, you’re supposed to yield to them at a crosswalk. So, please pay attention, because I am still hearing people saying that people are not stopping. I don’t want to see someone get hurt,” said Dalton.
Later on, the council observed a presentation regarding the 88th Texas Legislation Session, by Louie Sanchez with Hance Scarorough L.L.P. The city has executed an agreement of representation with the firm.
According to Sanchez, prior to working with the law firm, he was employed in the office of Eddie Lucio for 14 years.
“I know this community well,” said Sanchez, who, according to him, was honored to be working in conjunction with SPI. “I know your issues…I believe that together, we can work to ensure South Padre Island’s place at that state table.”
According to Sanchez, networked advocacy in the capital allows the best opportunity to meet legislative goals.
“Sometimes it requires us asking politely,” said Sanchez. “Other times, it requires us insisting.”
He pronounced his belief that taking into consideration the work the Island has been able to complete in the past, shows its ability to achieve what he believes are priorities for SPI to achieve in the future, by means of this opportunity of advocacy.
