On Saturday, Jan. 28, Save RGV held a New Year’s Meet and Greet at the South Texas Ecotourism Center.
Save RGV, formerly known as Save RGV From LNG, is a “non-profit corporation organized for educational and environmental advocacy to promote environmental justice and sustainability.” It operates purely on volunteer power.
Board members present at the event included Jim Chapman and John Young.
According to Chapman, Save RGV was formed in 2014 after concerns regarding large companies having the intent to construct liquefied natural gas [LNG] terminals along the Port Isabel Ship Channel emerged.
“I think we [Save RGV] are all conservationists and want to see the beauty of this area, Eastern Cameron County, remain,” said Chapman.
According to NextDecade, the company is developing Rio Grande RGV in order to produce 27 million tonnes of low carbon-intensive LNG for global export markets.
Chapman claimed that “If Rio Grande LNG is built, it will be the largest stationary source of air pollution in the Rio Grande Valley.”
NextDecade states on its website that “By combining emissions reduction associated with our carbon capture and storage project, responsibly sourced gas, and our pledge to use net-zero electricity, Rio Grande LNG is expected to produce a lower carbon intensive LNG for the world.”
“We are skeptical that they are actually going to do that,” claimed Chapman. “There has never been a LNG plant with carbon capture…We are not opposed to carbon capture. We are opposed to using that simply as a marketing tool.”
Young stated that Rio Grande LNG has taken a “huge financial risk.” He alleged that it had started “limited initial site preparation activities in Oct. 2022 before making a $7 to $11 billion dollar or so LNG Terminal Final Investment Decision.”
