Rita Garcia, a counselor at Port Isabel Junior High, has received a proclamation from the City of Port Isabel, at the March 28 City Commission meeting, to honor her 50 years of service in the school district.
Garcia, who Point Isabel Independent School District has employed since she was 18, has worked at every campus in the district, and even though she is celebrating her 50th year of service, retirement is nowhere in her foreseeable future.

“The proclamation from the city was very heartwarming, and it’s very nice of them to do those recognitions for people who have given so much to the community,” said Garcia.
Garcia, who knew at an early age she wanted to give back to the community, believes that in giving, you will receive, and Garcia explains that she has received tenfold.

“I’ve gotten back what I’ve put in through the bonds and connections I’ve made with students,” said Garcia.
While working at every campus, there have been incredible mentors, and new things that happen every day, according to Garcia.

“I’ve been very blessed and very fortunate, and I still look forward to [working] every day; it’s like another chapter added to the book,” Garcia explained.

The student’s social and emotional needs are in high demand at the junior high level, accodring to Garcia.
“I’ve been busier than ever, and there is never a dull moment,” Garcia said. “After five decades, I am still learning that this generation is totally different, and I am learning as I go.”
