Last week the Port Isabel Tarpons Tennis team competed in the 32-4A Tennis District Meet held at Zapata. The meet consisted of the following schools, Port Isabel, La Feria, Zapata, Brownsville Harmony, Hidalgo, Raymondville and RGC La Grulla. Only the top two places advances to the Regional Meet.
In the JV division, freshmen Valeria Ruiz and Kim Juarez moved up to play in the JV competition and won first place in the girl’s doubles. Grace Ortiz took third place in the girl’s singles and David Olmos placed third in the boy’s singles.

As far as the Varsity PI competitors, the mixed doubles team of Xaria Boling and Ezequiel Palestina qualified for the next round. The duo entered the competition as the number one seed and they didn’t disappoint as they ended the day as District Champions. Tennis Coach Maria Ramon said the team felt some pressure due to the seeding but they shook off the nerves, and “stayed calm and confident and they played their game… and took care of business”.

Also qualifying for the next round was freshman, Kirin Cantu who finished in second place in the girl’s singles. During the season, Cantu played in a couple of JV tournaments and did well. Coach Ramon took a chance and moved her up to varsity competition. During the meet, she shocked La Feria by upsetting the number one seed in the semi-finals. On day two, she lost to a competitor from Zapata which dropped her down to second place. She then had another match against La Feria and again won and secured her second-place finish.
