PI athletes earn gold at District Track Meet

On April 13, the Tarpon track teams traveled back to Raymondville to compete in the 32-4A District Track and Field Meet. The meet had the following eight district schools attending: Port Isabel, La Feria, Raymondville, Zapata, Hidalgo, RGC La Grulla, Brownsville Harmony and Brownsville Jubilee. With a trip to the Area round on the line, PI saw a lot of their athletes set new personal records.

In the men’s division, one of Port Isabel’s top performers was Kaleb Clinton who won the gold medal in the Shot Put event with a throw of 43’-09”. Clinton also earned a bronze medal in the Discus with a throw of 116’-11” and will advance to the 31-32 Area Track Meet in both events. Also earning a gold medal was the 4×200 Relay team of Edward Sanchez, Luis Ramos, Nathaniel Gonzalez and Anthony Garcia, who won their event with a time of 1:33.51 minutes.

Other medalists include Evan Galvan who won silver in the Triple Jump event with a distance of 40’-00.75”.  Luis Ramos also won silver in the 200 Meters with a time of 22.65 second. Ramos also earned bronze medals in the 100 Meters (11.29 seconds) and Long Jump (20’-00”) setting new personal records (PR) in all three events. Lastly, Cleveland Smith won bronze in the 800 Meters run with a time of 2:08.75 minutes (PR).

4×400 Relay: Eli Garza, Anthony Garcia, Christian Smith, Edward Sanchez (5, 3:46.84)
Shot Put: Juan Acheves (4, 40’-10”) (PR)
High Jump: Jeffery Smith (4, 5’-06”), Christian Smith (5, 5’-04”), Cleveland Smith (10, 5’-00”)
Pole Vault: Kevin Morales (8’-00”)
Long Jump: Anthony Garcia (4, 19’-11.50”), Evan Galvan (11, 17’-02”)
Triple Jump: Christian Smith (5, 38’-11.75”), Cleveland Smith (7, 37’-06.50”)
The top three men’s teams were La Feria with 205 points, RGC La Grulla with 112 points and Raymondville with 104 points. Port Isabel came in fourth place with 101 points.
The women’s division had several Port Isabel athletes come away with medals. Chelsea Gonzalez had a great day by winning gold medals in the Shot Put (33’-04”) and in the Discus (123’-01”) events. Also earning a gold medal was Emily Ramos who won the 300m Hurdles event with a time of 49.62 seconds, setting a new personal record. Sophomore Emily Burrage won two silver medals in the 100m Hurdles (17.23 seconds) and in the High Jump (4’-08”) events. Other silver medalists were Rebekah Camacho (400 Meters, 1:04.32 minutes) and Krysalee Grienier (100 Meters, 13.12 seconds).
