On May 6 of 2023, an election is going to be held by the Point Isabel Independent School District for their Board of Trustees. The positions up for election are Place 6, currently held by Frank Davalos Jr., and Place 7, currently held by Cecelia Castillo.

Frank Davalos Jr. is running unopposed for Place 6, though incumbent Cecilia Castillo is being challenged by Nancy Martinez for Place 7. Both candidates are graduates of Port Isabel High School and both have been working in education for many years.

“I graduated from Port Isabel High School,” Castillo said, “I was sixth in my class in 1972. I served our students in the Port Isabel ISD for 29 years. I began as a teacher and then was a principal and supervisor and assistant superintendent.”

Martinez comparatively said of herself, “I’m a graduate of Port Isabel High School, class of 1992. Both my daughter and my sons are also graduates of Port Isabel High School. I began my career as a special education classroom paraprofessional in 2003. The last four years I have been in the operations department for a public education system. Currently, I am the interim maintenance director/ transportation director for one of our neighboring school districts.”

As for why she would want to be elected to the school board Martinez responded, “My goals are to make sure that we are achieving the mission goal set by Point Isabel ISD. And I do believe in transparency. I do believe in having financial responsibility. The who, the what, the where, the when and the why. Those are the questions that we should ask.”

Martinez explained how she would achieve these goals if elected saying, “The how is always asking the questions to get the detailed answers, and sometimes you just get a bland answer and that’s it. And I’m more of a, ‘justify to me why and where did the funds go? How was it spent? Where is it going?’”
