This past Saturday, May 6, the Lady Tarpons competed in the first Annual Cardinal Volleyball Spring Tournament. The 12-team tourney had the following teams competing: Harlingen High, Harlingen South, Weslaco, Rio Grande City, Lyford, Mercedes, Brownsville Veterans, Raymondville, La Feria, IDEA, Donna North and Port Isabel.
The tournament utilized a single-game elimination system where the team winning the main bracket faced off with the winner of the loser’s bracket. Harlingen beat Mercedes, Port Isabel and Weslaco to win out the main bracket. Meanwhile, Harlingen South came back from their third-round loss to Weslaco to face and beat Harlingen High in the championship game.
As far as the Port Isabel squad, they faced off with Raymondville in their first game. The Lady Bearkats got off to a 3-0 in the first match and kept PI at bay early in the match. Down 11-8, PI got its first lead of the game (12-11) as the team rallied behind the serving of Desiree Vidaurri. The Lady Kats managed to tie the game up at 12-12, but the Lady Tarpons went on another run behind the serving of Alexa Vega. A service fault by the Lady Kats made it 24-16 in favor of PI. With game point on the line, PI’s Kimberly “YaYa” Barrera proceeded to serve the ball. Both teams rallied but Raymondville failed to return the ball a third time and PI won the first match. Port Isabel then won the next match 25-18 to win the best of three series as they advanced to round two.
