At the Point Isabel Independent School District Board Meeting on July 18 it was reported by the contractor, Gerlach Builder, who was hired to complete the renovations of the district’s campuses that the tests for asbestos at Garriga Elementary had come back positive. The district had been waiting for these results which had only been returned to the contractor the morning of the meeting in question.

Following the reveal of these test results Superintendent Theresa Capistran made the meeting aware that the school district was not aware of the material being in the buildings. The contractor said that abatement would be recommended by the testing company to remove the substance from the campuses it was found in or to encapsulate it to prevent it from causing harm.
