The Port Isabel Boys Cross Country team has gained momentum, improving their run times the last few weeks. During the Rio Hondo Invitational held on Sept. 16, the team finished in second place, just five points shy of first place Mercedes. The team then took a week off to rest, recover and train for their biggest challenge yet, the 2023 RGVCCCA Meet of Champions Invitational held on Saturday, Sept. 30, in Mission, TX.
The PI Boys cc team took it up a notch as they moved up to compete with the big boys in the 6A/5A 5000-meter run. The event consisted of 190 registered runners from all over the Valley.
Led by standout runner Cleveland Smith, the Port Isabel CC team had a great showing as they finished with 110 points, good enough for second place out of 22 teams. The other top five teams were: 1. Donna 42, Harlingen South 149, Brownsville Veterans 159 and Vanguard Rembrandt 163.
Team scoring was based on points awarded to individual runners according to their order of finish. The points of the top five runners for each team were accumulated for a final team score.
