This Tuesday, October 17, the Port Isabel Lady Tarpons played a district game versus the visiting La Grulla Lady Gators. This was the second meeting between the two teams, with La Grulla previously beating Port Isabel 3-0 in September.
Fast forward to this week, and the Lady Gators entered the game with a 17-9 record, while Port Isabel has struggled to pick up wins this season. Port Isabel knew it would be a tough matchup. The Lady Tarpons played a competitive first set as they went back and forth against the Lady Gators. Ultimately, the Lady Gators pulled away and won the first set. La Grulla was the more technical and efficient team as they went on to sweep Port Isabel in the best-of-five series in three sets, 25-19, 25-10 and 25-14.
The Lady Tarpons opened the game with a serving point, but the Lady Gators quickly took control as they jumped out to a 5-2 lead. The Lady Tarpons started to claw their way back as a thundering spike by PI’s Emily Burrage had PI just a point behind La Grulla at 6-5.
A service foul by La Grulla brought PI’s Desiree Vidaurri up to serve. She went on to “Ace” the serve to tie the game up at 10-10. The Lady Tarpons added another point before they returned the ball to La Grulla. As the game progressed, the teams exchanged leads several times.
