Tax statements mailed countywide

BROWNSVILLE, TX—Cameron County Tax Assessor-Collector (CCTAC), Antonio “Tony” Yzaguirre Jr., informs property owners that approximately 219,233 tax statements for Tax Year 2023 were mailed to personal and real estate property owners this week.

“If taxpayers have not received a tax bill, they can pay their taxes online at cameroncountytx.gov/tac or any of our ten branch offices countywide,” said Yzaguirre. These tax statements include Cameron County and all of the other taxing jurisdictions within Cameron County. According to a media statement issued by the CCTAC’s office, Cameron County is responsible for collecting all property taxes for every taxing body within the county.

According to the Yzaguirre, there are 203,479 real estate property accounts and 15,754 personal property accounts to be mailed. The total levy for 2023 on all taxing jurisdictions is $557,888,296.52. As per Sec. 3 1.01 (g) of the Texas Property Tax Code, he added that taxpayers are responsible for paying property taxes regardless of whether a tax statement was mailed or not. Taxpayers may find property tax balances on the tax assessor collector’s website: cameroncountytx.gov/tac.

According to Yzaguirre, property tax statements are mailed early to allow taxpayers to take advantage of the tax discounts offered by certain districts. “We urge the public to take advantage of tax discounts available to property owners who pay taxes early,” he added. Payments made in October will receive a 3% discount, a 2% discount in November, and a 1% discount during December, but only for those districts that offer the discounts.

There are no discounts for taxes paid in January 2024. Taxes for 2023 are due on January 31, 2024, and are delinquent on February 1, 2024, Yzaguirre said. Homestead Exemption Updates The Texas Legislature passed SB2 this year, and Texas voters will have the final approval of the property tax relief bill on November 7, 2023. SB2 increased the homestead exemption amount from $40,000 to $100,000. For the increase to remain, voters must successfully pass Proposition 4 on the ballot of the Constitutional Amendment Election on November 7, 2023.

The Texas Legislature also gave the County Tax Assessor-Collector the authority to include the $100,000 exemption in October rather than November when the voters are scheduled to vote on this amendment. The 2023 property tax statement will consist of a $100,000 exemption on all school district tax accounts with a homestead exemption approved by the Cameron Appraisal District.

This will allow taxpayers to take advantage of the tax savings upfront in October, along with the 3% discount offered, according to the CCTAC’s press release. “This exemption grants huge savings on school taxes for homesteaders and individuals over 65 years of age that have a homestead application on file,” Yzaguirre said. If the voters do not vote in favor of this amendment on November 7 and the amendment fails, the CCTAC’s office will mail an additional tax statement after the election for the balance.
