Amidst the holiday season, the community spirit is thriving, with generous contributions pouring in from various groups, events, and residents, all aimed at bringing joy to local children in Port Isabel and Cameron County.
Beyond the borders of Port Isabel, the longstanding tradition of spreading joy extends to Cameron County, where constables don Santa Claus attire and embark on heartwarming journeys through low-income areas, delivering donated toys and spreading cheer among children. Constable Norman Esquivel expresses deep gratitude for the overwhelming support, emphasizing their office’s commitment to distributing toys to different Headstart programs, benefitting over 350 children from the community.
Esquivel eagerly anticipates the upcoming efforts, where deputies, accompanied by Santa Claus, will traverse neighborhoods, distributing hundreds of toys over the next two weekends. He appreciates the active participation of the community, highlighting the enjoyment and substantial turnout during these events.
The Port Isabel Police Department continues to actively collect toys, with preparations underway for a significant Meet Santa Day at the community center. The distribution event at the Port Isabel event center is scheduled for Thursday, December 21, from 4- 6:30 p.m. This initiative underscores the community’s unwavering commitment to making this Christmas season extraordinary for those in need.
Chief Lopez acknowledges the increased donations, resulting in a notable 25% larger number of toys for children in need. At the PI community center event, children receive toys, capture photos with Santa, and indulge in pizza and drinks. Parents registering their children at the police station can actively participate in a raffle for prizes such as televisions and cash, a simple process requiring only the number and ages of children.
