As the holiday season unfolds, Nuevo Progreso offers an option as a shopping destination, providing an affordable and diverse retail experience. From Valley locals to Winter Texans, Progreso welcomes shoppers.
The town’s proximity to the border and its assortment of stores make it an accessible choice for those seeking unique and practical options for their festive needs.
Local vendors line the streets, presenting a range of goods from clothing and electronics to souvenirs, jewelry, stocking stuffers, traditional crafts, and more. SPI resident Jennifer White enthusiastically shares, “I like Mexico and the nation’s culture. The touristy shops have some great gifts, like big plant pots that are much less expensive, fun shoes, alcohol gift boxes.”
White genuinely appreciates the border town’s offerings. She said, “I usually buy food and candy for stocking stuffers, dresses, hanging swing chairs, and other cool, unique gifts.” While lacking the appeal of typical malls, the shopping district compensates with various stores catering to diverse preferences and reasonable prices. Visitors can explore utilitarian shops for everyday items or delve into specialty stores for unique gifts. “Part of the appeal of going to Nuevo Progreso lies in finding year-round bargains,” White added.
Debbie Hernandez adds her insights, saying, “I prefer to park on the US side to avoid all the traffic coming back, but if that’s not an issue for someone, then driving across is safe, too.” Hernandez advises, “The best time to go is during the week. Crossing is easy and smooth. You just need a driver’s license or passport.”
However, one Facebook user warns, “During the week, if you have an F-150, walk across! They have been stealing a lot of them here lately. One lady had hers stolen twice!”
Terry Galloway shares a positive perspective: “It’s a great experience. Crossing is easy, shopping is fun, and the people in Progreso are very accommodating. You’ll find all kinds of cool gifts.” She adds, “Sure. I’ve been going to Progreso for over 20 years.
My pharmacist is there; my Dentist is there. I’ve been going there for the last four weeks to my Dentist, but I take time to shop and make the trip worthwhile. I’ve got all these cool places that I visit. And I do have my little habits to give back to their community. I enjoy spreading the love. They’re good people.”
There are ample parking spaces on the U.S. side for a low fee, and a relatively close proximity to the bridge contributes to the ease of navigating the area. Security personnel add an extra layer of safety to the shopping experience. Remember to carry a passport or a photo ID and birth certificate for easy crossing.
