On December 9, Naturalist Educator Javier Gonzalez led a presentation and tour spotlighting migratory bird species wintering on South Padre Island. Centered around the upcoming Christmas bird count starting on December 14, Gonzalez, responsible for the seminar, provided insights into the unique bird species that make their temporary home on the Island.

With notable experience, Gonzalez explained the migratory patterns of these birds, highlighting that some travel from as far as Antarctica. Following a PowerPoint presentation detailing the diverse avian visitors, attendees ventured to the boardwalk to observe species like spoonbills and redneck ducks.

The counting effort from December 14-January 5 involves ten teams tallying the wintering birds. Gonzalez shared historical context, revealing that the tradition of bird counting emerged in response to an earlier, less conservation-minded practice. Previously, people played competitive bird shooting every Christmas, tallying their kills. In 1900, this evolved into the organized counting we see today.

Over time, conservation efforts gained momentum, leading to the formation of the Audubon Society in 1905. This marked a turning point, with enhanced record-keeping and a shift toward understanding and appreciating the diverse bird species that visit South Padre Island during the winter months.

Gonzalez shared his evident enthusiasm for his work. Attendees were treated to an informative and factual presentation that detailed the rich diversity of birds wintering on South Padre Island. The one-hour indoor session concluded with a guided tour on the boardwalk, allowing participants to witness firsthand the vibrant array of avian life that graces the island during the winter season.

One of the attendees, SPI resident Brenda Perdew, shared her experience, saying, “My favorite part was after we learned about the birds that come down for the winter, we went out and saw quite a few of them.” She also appreciated Gonzalelz’s notable fervor for his topic. Perdew’s remarks highlight the tangible connection between the educational session and the real-life observation, stressing the presentation’s impact on the participants’ understanding and appreciation of the wintering bird species on South Padre Island.
