This past Friday, January 19, the Port Isabel Lady Tarpons took on the Brownsville Jubilee Lady Titans in a home district game. Those attending PI’s Parent’s Night were in for a treat as the Lady Tarpons outplayed their opponent from the opening tipoff.

Jubilee’s offense attempted to strike first, but PI’s fierce defense blocked several attempted shots at the basket. After Jubilee grabbed several rebounds, PI’s Rebekah Camacho took matters into her hands as she stole the ball around halfcourt and made her way to the basket for the easy layup.

Dominating on both sides of the court, the Lady Tarpons closed out the first quarter with a 12-0 lead with Camacho scoring six points.

In the second quarter, PI rotated in a new set of players. Leading the charge was guard, Emily Burrage who exploded for 11 points in the quarter. Burrage was equally stout on defense as she logged in five steals, helping the Lady Tarpons jump out to a 39-3 halftime lead.

Jubilee’s defense stepped it up in the third as both teams went scoreless for the first three minutes of the quarter. The scoring slowed to a crawl the rest of the quarter, but the Lady Tarpons continued to extend their lead to 47-8 by the end of the third quarter.

As the fourth quarter got underway, fatigue started to set in, which led to many missed shots for both teams. PI made use of their bench, but still outscored Jubilee 10-0 in the last quarter to seal the win, 57-8.
PI’s leading scorer was Emily Burrage with 17 points who also had a big defensive game with 9 steals and 2 rebounds. Camacho finished the night with 10 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks and a rebound.

PI head coach Ramon Garcia, likes the improvement the team has made as they continue to gain more experience. According to coach Garcia, “We are coming into our own as a team. The players are slowly starting to work better as a team , there is more accountability between them.” He also states, “Our team is young and slowly starting to gel. When we are patient and confident, we can play with any team in our district.”

The Lady Tarpons will be on the road this Friday, January 26 as they take on district for Raymondville with a 6:30 p.m. game start.
