The City of Port Isabel held its 5th annual Easter Egg Hunt on March 30 at the Port Isabel Lighthouse. Lines started forming at 9 a.m., and the hunt started at 10 a.m.

With a staggering number of approximately 25,000 eggs, the air was filled with anticipation. The scene was delightful chaos as children, unable to contain their excitement, swarmed the field even before the countdown could finish.

The event was open to all, free of charge, and fun-filled for the entire family. As they waited in line, patrons had the chance to meet the Easter Bunny mascot. The Mayor of Port Isabel, Martin Cantu Jr., kicked off the egg hunt, expressing gratitude to the Chamber of Commerce, Walmart, and T-Mobile for their support.

With families given the go-ahead, children who found the red eggs marked “Port Isabel Lighthouse State Historic Site” received special prizes. Although the eggs across the field were all picked, that was merely the first part of the hunt. The next step was entering the Port Isabel Lighthouse and getting the next clue. That clue would take patrons to the Port Isabel Lighthouse visitors center, where they could learn more about the historical background of where they stood.

Valerie Bates, Director of Marketing for the City of Port Isabel, said that this year was the first time they added the historical factor of the hunt. “We hadn’t done that before, and we wanted to take a popular event and make it an opportunity for the visitors to connect with the history.” She further remarked, “We’re just very pleased by the community support, and it lets the residents and visitors enjoy the town side by side.”

Valerie shared that they saw a great turnout not only from residents of Port Isabel but also from those outside city limits. “We have people from Canada and Mexico, all over the Midwest, and all over Texas.” Valerie hopes that more will continue to come and show support.
