Track team competes in area meet

On April 10-11, the Port Isabel Boys’ and Girls’ Track teams, fueled by their unwavering determination and relentless effort, embarked on a challenging journey to Alice, TX, to compete in the highly competitive 4A District 31-32 Area Track & Field Meet.

This meet brought together the top athletes from 13 schools, including Port Isabel, Alice, Bishop, CC Calallen, CC Tuloso-Midway, Hidalgo, Kingsville King, La Feria, Laredo Harmony, Raymondville, RGC La Grulla, Robstown, and Zapata.

The Port Isabel athletes showcased their speed and agility in the boys’ division. In the 200 200-meter dash, Luis Ramos sprinted to a 3rd-place finish with 23.25 seconds, while Nathaniel Gonzalez secured 7th place with 24.24. In the 400 400-meter dash, Jesus Gaitan powered through to 6th place with a time of 54.08, and in the 800 800-meter run, Cleveland Smith maintained a solid pace to secure 7th place with a time of 2:08.97 minutes. Christian Garcia demonstrated his hurdling skills, finishing 8th in the 300 Meter Hurdles with a time of 46.72.

The boys’ relay teams finished as follows: The 4×100 team came in 5th with a time of 45.33 seconds. The 4×200 team came in 7th with 1:35.52, and the 4×400 team also came in 7th with 3:42.89.

In the boy’s field events, Christian Smith came in 4th place in the Triple Jump with 40’-02”. Other results were, High Jump 6th, Cleveland Smith, 5’-05”, 7th, Jeffrey Smith, 5’-03”, Long Jump 7th, Luis Ramos, 19’-05”, Pole Vault 7th, Mikel Sosa, 9’-06”, Shot Put 5th, Juan Acheves, 41’-11”.

In the girls’ division, senior Emily Ramos came in first place in both the 100-meter Hurdles (16.25) and 300-meter Hurdles (48.16). Meanwhile, freshman Elle Wall came in second place in the 200-meter Dash with a time of 27.25 seconds. Wall also finished third in the High Jump (5’-00”) and sixth in the Long Jump (15’-08”).
Other results include 400 Meter Dash 5th, Lizbeth Perez, 1:04.86, 100 Meter Hurdles 6th, Emily Burrage, 17.73, 300 Meter Hurdles 6th, Alisson Solorio, 55.75. The 4×100 Meter Relay team came in 6th with a time of 52.63, and the 4×400 Meter Relay team came in 8th with a time of 4:36.35.

In the girls’ field events, senior Chelsea Gonzales came in second in the Shot Put with 36’-06” and third in the Discus with a throw of 122’-09”. Also, Shot Put 6th, Escarlet Urrutia, 33’-01”, and High Jump 6th, Lizbeth Perez, 4’-08”.

The top four finishers, with their outstanding individual achievements, have earned the opportunity to advance to the Regionals meet. The anticipation builds as we wait to see who will then secure a spot in the prestigious State Track & Field Meet held in Austin, TX on May 2, 2024.
