Edinburg mother Cynthia Hernandez grieves after losing her child since an alleged drunk driver crashed into her daughter’s car while he drove the wrong way on the Queen Isabella Causeway at South Padre Island, according to authorities.
Mariah Desiree Enriquez was tragically killed after she was hit by a pick-up truck driven by a 48-year-old McAllen resident Monday, June 3, at 1:45 a.m.
Hugo Ernesto Lara drove his 2023 white Ford F-150 westbound in the eastbound lane, according to police reports. Lara reportedly crashed into the 2008 red Kia driven by 20-year-old Edinburg resident Mariah Desiree Enriquez, who was traveling eastbound on the Causeway.
Hernandez says her daughter was on her way to South Padre Island to stay with friends, but she didn’t make it. The young woman died at the scene of the accident. Lara is charged with intoxication and vehicular manslaughter, according to a Texas Department of Public Safety news release.
Lara was transferred to the Cameron County Jail and was arraigned at 9:38 a.m. He was charged and given a bond of $350,000. Early Monday morning, law enforcement had the dreaded task of knocking on Hernandez’s door to give her the solemn news that her daughter had perished.
Enriquez was the oldest of three daughters and her mother reminisces about her smile and the fact that she was always upbeat and happy. Now the family has to navigate their life without that smile.
Suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
