Port Isabel Early College High School is hosting its annual “Future Tarpon Football Camp” on Wednesday, July 31, and Thursday, Aug. 1. The camp is free for students ages five through incoming freshmen. The two-day event occurs at Tarpon Stadium and runs from 8-11 a.m.
The camp is organized by PIECHS coaches who are teaching fundamental football skills. Participants will be separated by age groups and then into different fundamental stations.
In previous camps, the young Tarpons took turns receiving handoffs and running the ball, a highly prioritized skill under the current coaching staff. The players then rotated to a different station where they practiced running routes and catching the ball as receivers. Meanwhile, the older linemen worked on their overall blocking techniques which include stances, get off, strike, stick and finish.
Defensively, participants also got a glimpse of being a defender, such as a linebacker or secondary player. They learned defensive skills such as how to back pedal, keeping an eye on the ball and adjusting to the incoming ball. The camp also covered the third phase of the game, the special teams. The participants ran drills such as punting and kicking the ball to simulate a kickoff or field goal try. The players also competed in a pass, punt and kick competition.
The attendees will be provided a T-shirt and water, but participants are encouraged to bring their own water bottle. For more information, contact the PIECHS Athletic Department at (956) 943-0092.
